Give us one word to inspire your poem and we will write it line by line, letting the poem grow as it goes.
"Line by line" is not a classical form with a rulebook — it is a working method. You give one word, and the poem is composed one line at a time, each line responding to the line above it. Poets use this method constantly: rather than drafting a whole poem and then fixing it, you write a line, read it back, and let it suggest the next. It is the fastest route out of a blank page, and it is how many fixed-form poems get drafted before they are forced into a rhyme scheme.
The generator on this page implements that method literally. You supply one word, and the poem grows line by line around it, with the word returning at the end. The result is a ten-line poem with a consistent seed — the same input produces the same poem, unlike the other generators here — which makes it useful for studying how a single theme can be carried across several lines.
An example of the method, taking one word — distance — and letting each line grow from the one before it:
There is a tender distance at the heart of things.
It turns slowly when the morning is quiet.
Some say it came from a river of ash,
carried carefully over a green field.
I found it turning near the harbour,
a calm reminder of what we lost.
If you listen closely, you will hear the distance turning.
And the whole town will answer softly in reply.
Each line picks up something from the line above it. "It turns" in line two becomes "I found it turning" in line five and "the distance turning" in line seven. The word you supplied returns in the title and in the final couplet, which is what gives a method-poem its feeling of closure. Notice the deliberate repetitiveness: this is a draft-generation technique, and repetition is the raw material you edit later, not a defect.
This page composes ten lines from the single word you type. That word seeds the whole poem: the same word produces the same poem every time, unlike the other generators here, because the word is used to shuffle the built-in lists deterministically. Your word returns in the title and in the final couplet.
This is a template and word-list engine, not an AI model. The word lists, the rhyme table and the templates are all part of the page, and every calculation happens in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to us, stored on a server, or used to train anything — we never receive it at all. There is no account, no sign-up and no cookie set by the generator itself. The full description is in our Terms of Use.
Copyright: you keep all rights in the words you type and in the poem this page produces. Print it, post it, publish it, perform it, adapt it, sell it — it is yours, and we claim no ownership over your output. Your input: the text you type stays in the page in your browser, is used only to build the poem you asked for, and is never transmitted, logged or shared. Clearing the form or closing the tab removes it. Accuracy: the syllable counts, rhymes and metres here are approximations produced by a program, so treat the result as a first draft and check anything you intend to publish or submit for assessment.
This page carries no advertising inside the poetry generator. There are no ads next to the input fields, none beside the Write me a poem button, and none inside the poem itself, so a mis-tap while writing is impossible. If we ever place a unit here it will sit in the single fixed editorial slot at the foot of the page, separated from the poem output by well over 1,200 characters of editorial text — the policy is set out on our Advertising page.
