How to write a free verse poem

  1. Fill in the fields above — use the Suggest buttons for inspiration, or Fill entire form with random ideas.
  2. Press Write me a poem and our word engine will compose your poem in seconds.
  3. Read it aloud, tweak a word or two, and make it yours.
💡 Tip: use evocative adjectives and powerful nouns to make your poems emotive. Free verse, no set rhyme.

Free verse is poetry without a fixed metre or a fixed rhyme scheme. That does not mean without form: free verse is organised by line breaks, by stanzas, by the rhythm of ordinary speech, and by the way a line turns. When a sentence runs past the end of a line and completes on the next one, that is enjambment, and it is free verse's most important tool — it controls pace and suspends meaning, which is what rhyme and metre do in fixed forms. Whitman, in Leaves of Grass (1855), is usually credited with establishing the long-lined English free verse that later poets refined.

The generator on this page builds short free-verse poems from a noun and two supporting words, with lines that vary in length rather than counting syllables. That variation is deliberate: it is what makes the poem read as speech rather than as a broken sonnet.

An example of the shape this page produces, with the line breaks doing the work:

River, grey river,
I watched you move without hurry,
the way the light leans at evening.
There is a door in every current,
and a quiet answer waiting to be found.
You are the name I keep returning to.

Nothing here rhymes and no line has a set number of syllables. What holds it together is repetition of the address (River, grey river … You are), one controlling metaphor (the river as something that answers), and line breaks that land on strong words — hurry, evening, found, to. Note that the longest lines are not the most important ones; the shortest line (River, grey river,) does as much work as any of them, because a short line isolated between longer ones gets emphasis.

How this page generates your poem

This page composes ten lines with no fixed metre and no rhyme scheme. Your noun, adjective and second noun lead the poem, and the remaining words come from the built-in lists. The lines vary in length deliberately, so the poem reads as speech rather than as a broken metrical pattern.

This is a template and word-list engine, not an AI model. The word lists, the rhyme table and the templates are all part of the page, and every calculation happens in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to us, stored on a server, or used to train anything — we never receive it at all. There is no account, no sign-up and no cookie set by the generator itself. The full description is in our Terms of Use.

Your words and your poem

Copyright: you keep all rights in the words you type and in the poem this page produces. Print it, post it, publish it, perform it, adapt it, sell it — it is yours, and we claim no ownership over your output. Your input: the text you type stays in the page in your browser, is used only to build the poem you asked for, and is never transmitted, logged or shared. Clearing the form or closing the tab removes it. Accuracy: the syllable counts, rhymes and metres here are approximations produced by a program, so treat the result as a first draft and check anything you intend to publish or submit for assessment.

Advertising on this page

This page carries no advertising inside the poetry generator. There are no ads next to the input fields, none beside the Write me a poem button, and none inside the poem itself, so a mis-tap while writing is impossible. If we ever place a unit here it will sit in the single fixed editorial slot at the foot of the page, separated from the poem output by well over 1,200 characters of editorial text — the policy is set out on our Advertising page.
